Two D.C. firefighters declared a 'Mayday' Thursday during a restaurant fire after a ceiling came down on them.
While they managed to escape unharmed, two others were injured, D.C. Fire Chief John Donnelly Sr. told NBC 4 News.
D.C. Fire and EMS spokesperson Vito Maggiolo said the fire started in a storage room behind the Georgetown restaurant.
Employees tried to fight the fire with an extinguisher before calling for firefighters
The fire went to two alarms as crews were working in extreme conditions.
As smoke from the Canadian wildfires created very poor air quality, an extensive rehab area was established to monitor firefighters involved in the operation.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
